FAQs

What are the trails like, will I be able to ride them?!

We’ve got a range of trails here to suit anyone who’s spent a bit of time on a bike. We have a big range of trails suitable for intermediate to advanced riders, but we also have an ever expanding range of options for the less confident. The easier trails start half way up the hill; once you’ve got those kicked to bits then you can work your way up, building confidence at a pace you’re comfortable with. We also have a nice and gentle pedal loop around the base of the bike park. At the other end of the scale, theres some seriously steep terrain here, with technical downhill tracks cut in to the bush. If you’re looking for a challenge, a training ground or simply a good time with your mates, then we’re sure you’ll find something to suit your riding ability.

Check out the detailed description of each trail here.

Do I need to make a booking?

For shuttle sessions, yes you do!! We’re a super small crew, there’s no office lady patiently waiting to greet the punters… so bookings are absolutely essential!

If you’re coming to pedal then you don’t need to make a booking in advance, but it’s not a bad idea! On days when no shuttles are running you will need to be entirely self sufficient - we may be unavailable to help if you get yourself in to trouble! Follow the instructions on the office door to sign yourself in if there’s no one around. To enter the bike park you must pay and sign in first!

What are the minimum / maximum number of riders?

On a normal day, we can take up to 10 riders per shuttle session. We can take larger groups with plenty of warning to round up extra drivers, get in touch to book with us directly.

The minimum number to run shuttles is 6. If you’re a group of 5 or less looking to ride together outside of our normal shuttle times, the Private Can-Am Shuttles is a great option for you.

Which bike should I bring?

Anything goes here! While most of the trails are mainly downhill, you don’t have to be riding a DH bike to enjoy them! A dual suspension pedal bike with plenty of travel (enduro bike) is recommended, however if you’re more of a XC type and keen to give it a go, then your regular bike should be fine. Just make sure the brakes are working well, all the bits and pieces are done up nice and tight, and you’re good to go.

Can I bring my e-bike?

Yes, we can shuttle e-bikes (you’d better be prepared to lift it on to the shuttle racks though!!).

The pedal pass is also a great option for e-bikers.

What else do I need?

Obviously a helmet is essential, we recommend a full face helmet but ultimately its up to you how you choose to protect your head. Same with protection; we recommend knee pads and any other protective equipment that you usually use. Water, snacks, extra layers of clothing, basic first aid stuff and spare bike parts are a good idea too. Check out the list here.

Do you have rental equipment?

We have a small fleet of Commencal bikes available to hire. You’ll need to book in advance so we can get it ready for you.

We also have a range of full face helmets and knee pads available for hire.

What if I have a mechanical issue?

Hopefully you will have ensured that your bike is running mint before you get here, however bikes do break!! We do have some brake pads, tubes etc in our shop but ultimately its up to you to bring what you need.. we’ll help where we can, but there’s no bike mechanic or workshop on site. The closest bike shop is Coastal Sports in Kaikoura.

Where can we get food or a drink?

The best answer… BYO! The lunch hut at the top of the park has an awesome view, or in the summer months you could head to the river for a picnic and a swim between shuttle sessions. We’re 40 km from Kaikoura where there’s lots of different options, or you could check out The Store at Kekerengu (not open in the evenings).

Whats the shuttle road like? Can we self shuttle?

The shuttle road is more of a well-maintained farm track; it’s relatively steep and technical, so we’re very selective about who we allow to drive! Only our crew can drive on the tracks, and you can rest assured that your driver is skilled and experienced on the trails.

Are we able to pedal up instead?

Yes, a pedal pass is available for $20 (or free with membership). The lower half of the bike park is great for pedalling, with lots of different trail options and about 200 m elevation. The top half, in all honesty, is bloody steep! There’s no designated up track to the top so you’d be on the shuttle road. When shuttles are operating you’ll need to stay on the lower half of the hill.

Can I bring my dog?

The short answer… no, sorry. We’re an operating farm and the land owner wishes to keep the land dog free. If you’re road tripping with your dog then give us a call and we’ll see if we can sort something out, but it will not be able to go up the hill with you. Any dogs on the property need to be tied up or on a lead at all times. They also need to have been recently dosed for sheep measles (eg Drontal). More info regarding sheep measles (otherwise known as Ovis) can be found here.
